How Do You Knit an Easy Scarf?
Scarves are some of the easiest knitting projects for beginners because the most basic patterns require only knit and purl stitches and some chunky yarn. At their most basic, you can knit a scarf by simply casting on stitches to your desired width and then adding rows until the scarf reaches your preferred length.
Using a knitting kit is an even easier way to knit a scarf if you’re an absolute beginner. That’s because the kit will come with instructions and all of the materials you need, including the right yarn weight and type of knitting needles – so you don’t have to choose them yourself.
There are various ways of starting and ending a knitted scarf, and several different common stitches that vary depending on the pattern you’re following. The best stitch for beginners is a basic knit or purl stitch, but 2×2 rib stitches, cable, or brioche stitches can be great for adding thickness and texture too.
With standard worsted weight yarn and mid-sized needles, you’ll usually need to cast on around 25-40 stitches for an average sized scarf. Most knitted scarves are around 8-10 inches wide on average, but you can make it wider or longer depending on your preference.
If you are an absolute beginner, we recommend starting with a small scarf to practice maintaining tension and avoid spending too much time on one project. If you want to speed up the process, check out our list of recommended knitting classes.
How Long Will It Take?
As per usual, the time it takes to knit a scarf will depend on your skill level, the pattern you’re using, and the size of the scarf you’re knitting.
Using chunky yarn and large knitting needles will drastically reduce the time it takes to work up your scarf. That’s why similar projects like chunky knitted blanket kits only take an hour or two to finish.
If you’re just beginning, we recommend choosing a chunky scarf knitting pattern and allowing yourself a few hours a day for a week to finish the project. If you’re experienced, you’ll be able to knit a scarf in just a few days.
What Materials Do You Need to Knit a Scarf?
Most scarves use just one or two skeins of yarn. The chunkier the scarf, the less yarn you’ll use in total. However, this can vary depending on the stitch technique, style, and size of the scarf.
The average winter scarf can be knit with needles anywhere from 5mm to 15mm in diameter. If you tend to knit loosely, you should use smaller needles. If you knit tightly, use larger needles. Generally speaking, it’s best to simply use the needles suggested in the pattern instructions.
Remember, if you use a different yarn weight to what’s suggested by the designer, you will also need to change your knitting needle size to get the correct gauge.
