Super chunky blankets are a staple project for knitters of all skill levels. They’re extremely easy to knit and the heavy yarn is a dream on cozy winter evenings.
Chunky blankets come in lots of different shapes and sizes, and giant knitted blankets are the most extreme. They combine the simple stitchwork of a normal knitted blanket with the drama and sheer size of jumbo weight yarn.
Giant knitting isn’t for everybody, though. It can feel clumsy if you’re used to normal knitting, and it tends to come with a high price tag. That’s why we’ve hand-picked this list of 16 chunky blanket knitting kits to help you decide which type to pick for your next project. It includes a mixture of normal chunky blankets, giant blankets, and arm knitted blankets.
Here’s a quick preview of what’s to come:
These knitting kits contain all of the materials and instructions you need to make the blanket of your choice, including extra large needles and jumbo yarn where necessary.
If you’d rather start with something smaller, you can also take a look at our list of baby blanket knitting kits instead.
What’s the Difference Between a Chunky Blanket Knitting Kit and a Giant Blanket Knitting Kit?
A typical chunky knit blanket kit will come with around 700g of bulky yarn and a pair of circular knitting needles – usually 15mm or bigger. You’ll cast on a certain number of stitches depending on the width of the blanket, and then work it up in rows using simple knits and purls.
These projects don’t usually take longer than a few days thanks to the heavy yarn weight, simple stitching technique, and big needles.
The technique for a giant knitted blanket is exactly the same, but the kits include jumbo weight roving yarn and giant needles up to 40mm in diameter instead. In some cases, you’ll be arm knitting the blanket without any needles at all. It’s essentially the same process, except that every step is supersized!
Both blanket types make for a good introduction to the basics of knitting, but there are some key differences. Giant yarn tends to knit up in just a few hours, but it can get very heavy. If you’re knitting with your arms or giant needles, you’ll also have to keep your tension loose and pay attention to how you block your knitting.
If you’re interested in getting better at arm knitting, you can learn everything you need to know in the Introduction to Arm Knitting class on Domestika. For less than $20, you can get 11 lessons covering all of the necessary materials and techniques.
We’ll also explain how to knit giant and chunky blankets in more detail later on in this article.

Knitting a Giant Blanket: What You Need to Know
Knitting a chunky blanket is relatively easy, and very similar to other knitting projects. Much like knitted scarf kits, you’ll use big circular needles, a simple stitch pattern, and some heavy weight yarn to work the blanket flat row after row.
Knitting a giant blanket is a little different. Giant blankets are soft, indulgent textiles with an incredible texture, but they can feel slightly slow or cumbersome compared to normal knitting.
Instead of normal needles and yarn, you’ll use jumbo yarn and giant needles, or you might not use needles at all.
There are a few key things you’ll need to keep in mind:
Maintaining Your Tension
The first thing you’ll need to consider is your tension. Many giant and arm knitted blankets use unspun yarn, which is soft but extremely delicate. If you knit your blanket too tightly, you risk pulling the loose fibers apart and ruining the integrity of your project.
If your giant yarn does unravel, you can roll the fibers together gently to bond them back together and keep knitting.
Looking After Your Giant Blanket
If you’re using big unspun wool, you’ll need to treat your blanket after you’ve finished knitting it. If you don’t wash and block it, it’s likely to shed fibers easily and have a faint woolen smell.
Wash the blanket by hand and lay it flat to dry completely. Over time, the fibers will begin to ‘felt’ or bond together to prevent pilling in the future.
If you’re not interested in treating the work after you’ve knitted it, you can also purchase a pre-knitted giant blanket that has already been processed.
How Much Yarn Do You Need?
As always, the amount of yarn you need for a giant blanket will depend on your tension and how big the blanket is. A throw-size chunky blanket might use anywhere from 600g to 1200g of heavy wool, while the same size giant blanket could use up to 10kg.
As a general rule, it usually works out to around 1kg of wool per 0.5 square meters of knitting. If you’re buying a blanket knitting kit, then the right amount of yarn will be included in the kit.
Depending on the size of your blanket, all of this yarn can get heavy. The key is to rest the knitting on your lap so your arms don’t get tired.
How Long Will It Take?
Knitting a chunky or giant blanket is a lot quicker than most knitting projects thanks to the heavy yarn and big needles. Generally speaking, the bigger the yarn and needles, the quicker it will be to knit up. For example, most knitters can knit a giant lap blanket in under an hour, and a normal-sized blanket in just a few hours.
Giant yarn can become heavy and cumbersome, which means you may need to take breaks that slow down the process. You’ll also need to spend time processing the finished blanket, which can be time consuming.
Is Arm Knitting a Blanket Easy?
Giant blankets, chunky blankets, and arm knitted blankets are some of the easiest projects out there. The hardest part is usually finding the right yarn, which is why they make such great knitting kits.
Arm knitting is especially easy. If you already know how to do basic knit stitches, then the process is exactly the same – you just use your arms instead of needles.
Why Are Chunky Blanket Knitting Kits so Expensive?
Put simply, big knitted blanket kits need a lot of yarn. The more yarn there is, the more expensive your knitting kit will be.
In addition to the pure volume of wool, most chunky and giant blanket knitting kits use pure merino wool thanks to its soft texture and hypoallergenic qualities. Merino wool dyes easily and retains its appearance over time, but these qualities do increase the price compared to synthetic alternatives.
